Translation plays an important role as a powerful medium of representation, especially in a world of intensified cultural and technological interaction. It is a complex process that involves not only the transfer of texts across languages and cultures, but also the exercise of a politics and ethics of representation that reflect the positionality of the translator and are embedded in structures of authority as well as specific ideological and technological environments. This is nowhere more evident than in the contemporary Arab World, including Egypt, which has increasingly become one of the most important loci of political and cultural encounters, clashes and conflicts. Recent events in this part of the world urge us to reconsider, reread and rewrite the histories of translation and the practices of textual representation not only in Arabic but across the full range of world languages.
This conference will offer a platform for focused debate about the cultural politics of translation in the Arab World and in the global context.
Themes to be addressed may include but are not restricted to the following:

If you are interested in presenting a paper, please send an abstract of 300 words by 15 December 2014 to Culturalpolitics2015@gmail.com. Notifications of acceptance will be sent out by 25 February 2015.

200 Sterling Pounds for non-Egyptian delegates registering after 1 September 2015
100 Sterling Pounds for non-Egyptian students
300 Egyptian Pounds for Egyptian delegates and foreign residents
100 Egyptian Pounds for attending the sessions only + certificate of attendance
Free admission for Egyptian and foreign students based in Egypt
