The Translation Programme was established in 1990 with the aim of training sophisticated cross-cultural communicators to serve the local community and the Chinese Mainland, and has since become one of the leading such programmes in the region, in both teaching and research. The Programme is now inviting applications for the position of Full Professor, with expertise of relevance to the following Faculty-wide research niche of the Faculty of Arts:
Transcultural and Interdisciplinary Classics
The appointee is expected to teach and to build research capacity in at least two of the following areas: a) Buddhist translation and transcultural studies; b) translation history; c) literary translation, with a focus on premodern works and contexts; d) transcultural exchange in premodern East Asia; and e) research methodologies for historical, interdisciplinary studies. In addition to course-teaching for the Programme, he/she will also be responsible for supervision of projects and dissertations from the BA through Doctoral levels.
The appointee will be expected to play a pivotal role in fostering related research and publication activities, particularly as relating to the Faculty research niche. He/She is also expected to be an active member in Programme and Faculty-level activities in such areas as quality assurance and monitoring, curriculum design and maintenance, and student mentoring. The appointee will also be expected to recruit top-quality, international PhD candidates in support of the Programme’s research postgraduate studies programme.
Applicants should possess a PhD degree in an area relevant to those outlined above. These may include (though are not limited to) Translation Studies, Interpreting Studies, Transcultural or Intercultural Studies, History, Premodern East Asian Literature, and Buddhist Studies. Applicants should be proven researchers of impact with a successful track record of grant applications, internationally-benchmarked achievement in their areas of research specialisation, as well as documented service to the global profession. They should also possess a strong and active research programme (including forthcoming peer-reviewed books and articles in top-tier venues), as well as a demonstrated interest in collaborative work in the cross-cultural context.
A commitment to working in a multilingual and cross-cultural setting is essential. Given the Chinese/English orientation of the Translation Programme, a command of Chinese is preferred, although consideration will also be given to other candidates who have a suitable profile and vision to flourish in this position.
Initial appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract of three years commencing September 2017, or as soon thereafter as practicable for the applicant. Re-appointment thereafter is subject to mutual agreement and availability of funding.
Remuneration package includes retirement/gratuity benefits, annual leave, medical and dental scheme, housing assistance and relocation allowance wherever appropriate.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
